Sovana (wine)

The name Sovana DOC refers to Italian red and rosé wines from the province of Grosseto , Tuscany . The wines have had a "controlled designation of origin " ( Denominazione di origine controllata - DOC) since 1999 , which was last updated on March 7, 2014.

Cultivation

Cultivation and vinification of these wines are only permitted in the municipalities of Pitigliano and Sorano and in parts of the municipality of Manciano in the province of Grosseto .

In 2015, 15,396 hectoliters of DOC wine were produced from 252 hectares of vineyards.

The denomination prescribes the following grape varieties for the most important types :

  • Sovana Rosso and Sovana Rosato (also called “Superiore” and “Riserva”): Must contain at least 50% Sangiovese . A maximum of 50% of other red grape varieties approved for cultivation in the Tuscany region may be added.
  • The following wines must contain at least 85% of the grape variety mentioned. A maximum of 15% other analogue grape varieties that are approved for cultivation in the Tuscany region may be added.
    • Sovana Aleatico (also called "Superiore", "Riserva" and " Passito ")
    • Sovana Cabernet Sauvignon (also called "Superiore" and "Riserva")
    • Sovana Ciliegiolo (also called "Superiore" and "Riserva")
    • Sovana Merlot (also called "Superiore" and "Riserva")
    • Sovana Sangiovese (also called "Superiore" and "Riserva")

The wines can carry the predicate "Riserva" if they are not sold before November 1st of the second year after the harvest.
