Vernaccia

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The name Vernaccia is used in Italy for several white and red wine varieties that are not necessarily related to one another . The name Vernaccia is often found because it goes back to the Italian word vernacolo (native).

There is a white Vernaccia Bianca (also Bergamasca, Guarnaccia, Vernatsch White) and a red Vernaccia Nera (also Cerretana, also Guarnaccia, Vernaccia di Teramo and Urnaccia). There are also numerous other varieties whose names begin with Vernaccia and have a place or area name added as the second part. Well-known is a variety from Tuscany , from which the DOCG white wine Vernaccia di San Gimignano is made today (also Zuccaia, Verdea D'Arceteri, Vernaccia di San Gimignano, Vernaccia di Tuscany).

In Sardinia , the DOC white wine Vernaccia di Oristano is produced from a variety that is not related to the others .

In the region Marche is of a than Vernaccia Nera or delle Marche Vernaccia designated species of red DOC sparkling wine Vernaccia di Serrapetrona generated. It may be a variant of the Grenache variety . The red wine grown in South Tyrol as Vernatsch has nothing to do with the Vernaccia wines. Rather, it corresponds to the Trollinger that is widely grown in Württemberg .
