Vernaccia di Oristano

The Vernaccia di Oristano DOC is an Italian white wine in the valley of the Tirso in Campidano , Oristano , Sardinia . The wine can be dry to sweet. Since 1971 it has had a "controlled designation of origin " ( Denominazione di origine controllata - DOC), which was last updated on March 7, 2014.

Cultivation

The vineyards must be in the province of Oristano. The wine may only be produced in the municipalities of Baratili San Pietro , Cabras , Milis , Narbolia , Nurachi , Ollastra , Oristano , Riola Sardo , San Vero Milis , Siamaggiore , Simaxis , Solarussa , Tramatza , Zeddiani and Zerfaliu .

The cultivation area is very small and the quantities produced are small.

All wines of this denomination must be made from the Vernaccia di Oristano grape variety and have at least 15 percent alcohol by volume .

During the month of March of the year following the harvest, the wine, after filtration and possible clarification, is poured into chestnut or oak barrels to mature for at least two years. For the production of the “Liquoroso” type, pure alcohol is added after the desired degree of fermentation has been reached in order to stop fermentation.

The year of harvest should be indicated on the label. (Exception: "Liquoroso" type)

  • Vernaccia di Oristano
  • Vernaccia di Oristano “Superiore” : maturation for at least three years
  • Vernaccia di Oristano “Riserva” : Maturation for at least four years
  • Vernaccia di Oristano "Liquoroso"
