Cabras is an Italian municipality with 9043 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) and is located in the province of Oristano in western Sardinia . The uninhabited island of Mal di Ventre belongs to the municipality .

Culture and sights

The main attractions of this region of the Campidano are to the west of the village on the Sinis Peninsula . The medieval town of Crabiliis or Capriles belonged to the Arborea judiciary .

The largest lake in the Sinis, west of the city, has a wide belt of reeds . The traditional fishing boats, ls fassonis, tied together from bundles of reeds, are rarely seen. Hundreds of flamingos live in the northern part of the lake . It is one of the most fish-rich waters in Italy. In the 17th century, the place belonged to the Spanish crown, later Genoese bankers who sold it to a noble family from Oristano . The heirs of the last owner sold the lake to the Sardinian government.

The fishing village of Cabras is known for its fish restaurants. The Renaissance basilica "Santa Maria" stands on the lakeshore. The collection of the Museo Civico mainly shows finds from the Cuccuru S'Arriu necropolis and from the Phoenician-Roman city of Tharros. There is also an exhibition on the culture, ecology, flora and fauna of the lake.

Regular events

The barefoot race ( Corsa degli Scalzi in Italian ) in honor of Saint Salvatore takes place between the end of August and the first Sunday in September. The route runs from Cabras to San Salvatore and back.

Culinary specialties

The best known specialty is the Bottarga di Cabras.
