Terralba (from terra and alba : white earth ) is an Italian municipality ( comune ) with 10,101 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Oristano in western Sardinia .

Location and dates

The municipality is located about 23 kilometers south-southeast of Oristano and about 70 kilometers northwest of Cagliari . Terralba borders in the south on the province of Sud Sardegna . The district of Marceddì is located directly on the Gulf of Oristano . Geographically, the municipality is limited to the east by the Monte Arci and the Marmilla . South of Marceddì is the Stagno di Marceddì and the Stagno di San Giovanni , a larger bay that is inhabited by numerous animals and plants because of the high salt content.

Several neighboring communities have joined forces to form the Unione dei Comuni del Terralbese . In addition to Terralba, these are: Arborea , Marrubiu , San Nicolò d'Arcidano and Uras .

history

The area was already settled in the Neolithic Age. Ultimately, the Carthaginians established a settlement here, which in Greek was called Neapolis (New City). In 238 BC this settlement was conquered by the Romans. The current settlement of Terralba goes back to the destruction of the settlement by the Saracens , so that it was reestablished in 1017. Terralba was the seat of a bishopric from the 12th to the 16th century.

Economy and Transport

At Monte Arci there are obsidian deposits that can be mined.

Strada Statale 126 runs through the municipality roughly parallel to Strada Statale 131 west of the municipality, which connects Oristano with Cagliari. With the neighboring communities there is a common train station ( Marrubiu-Terralba-Arborea ) on the non-electrified railway line Cagliari-Golfo Aranci Marittima .
