Bonarcado is an Italian municipality with 1538 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Oristano in Sardinia . It is located southeast of Monte Ferru , not far from the Monteferru-Sinis nature reserve.
At the northern exit of the village on a small square lined with pilgrims' huts (muristènes) stands the Condaghe di Santa Maria church , once one of the most important churches of the Arborea judiciary . Like the more famous Santa Maria del Regno in Ardara , it is entirely made of dark basalt and trachyte . From the early Tuscan - Lombard building phase (consecrated 1146/47) come the three-arched facade influenced by the cathedral of Santa Giusta with the later added octagon window, as well as the south wall up to the campanile and its lower part in the middle .
Judge Comita of the Arborea Judiciary invited his counterparts to the Bonarcado Conference in 1146 to resolve a controversy.
Between 1242 and 1268, the three-aisled annex from the campanile to the present-day high apse was expanded by Arab builders, who were here for the first time in Sardinia ( Mudejar style with arches and corrugated pilaster strips, etc.). In the 19th century the church (north side, upper part of the tower with baroque bulb, barrel vault inside) was changed again significantly.
Right behind the apse is the tiny Santuario della Madonna di Bonacattu , an important pilgrimage site. The original Byzantine central building (probably from the 7th century) was changed in the Mudejar style at the same time as Santa Maria. On the facade there are nose arches, which together form a Moorish stalactite arch, and majolica medallions , including some rare originals from the 13th century (blue floral pattern and dotted edge on a light background).
