Santa Giusta Cathedral

Romanesque basilica of Santa Giusta

The three-aisled cathedral of Santa Giusta is three kilometers south of Oristano on a hill in the north of the town of Santa Giusta in the province of Oristano in Sardinia . It is one of the most beautiful and largest Romanesque- Pisan churches in Sardinia.

For the construction of the cathedral of the diocese of Santa Giusta, which was completed in 1145 - which was annexed to the archbishopric of Oristano in 1504 - the Arborea judiciary ensured the participation of Pisan architects and Arab craftsmen . The slim, graceful shapes, the light-open construction and the still careful use of color patterns make the cathedral a protagonist of the new architectural style on the island.

From San Gavino in Porto Torres , the idea of pairs of dates pilasters supported blind arches . The slender half-columns of the apse go back to the influences of the Pisan cathedral as well as the triple window of the facade. The yokes of the cross vaults in the side aisles are not separated by belt arches , but are formed from the penetration of two vaulted barrels . The main portal with its relief arch is similar to that of San Frediano in Lucca , but on the other hand there are no other Tuscan examples of the idiosyncratic facade structure . The design of the front and the choir therefore clearly goes back to Lombard models.

Before the turn of the times, the Phoenician-Punic city of Othoca (old city) was located near the present-day cathedral , the port of which was on the now-covered Lake Stagno di Santa Giusta and whose stones and columns (like those of Tharros) were built into the cathedral.

The finds made in the area range from the 7th to the 3rd century BC. The necropolis of Othoca is near the church of Santa Severa. A Phoenician chamber tomb from the 7th century was discovered here. v. The building made of ashlars has a rectangular floor plan, two side niches and an imitation gable roof with ridge beams. This type of grave is known from the Levant , North Africa and southern Spain , but has only been found in Othoca in Sardinia so far. Next to the Santa Severa church are the ruins of a previous building from the 6th to 7th centuries.
