The Cagliari – Golfo Aranci Marittima railway is a railway line on the Italian island of Sardinia . It is operated by Rete Ferroviaria Italiana , a wholly owned subsidiary of Ferrovie dello Stato, the Italian state railway.

The route leads from Cagliari in the south to Golfo Aranci in the northeast of the island and was opened in stages between 1871 and 1883. It has some branching lines and connecting railways, including connections to Porto Torres and Iglesias , some of which, like the main line, are regularly used by passenger trains. The Italian state railway Ferrovie dello Stato handles all train operations on the route.

The total length of the route was originally 307 kilometers, but the length has been reduced to today's 299.6 kilometers through various route reconstruction measures such as route straightening. The route is not electrified and is therefore served by diesel locomotives and railcars. It is mostly single-track, the approximately 50-kilometer section from Cagliari to San Gavino Monreale is double-track . The height differences between Cagliari and Oristano are small, the rest of the route has the character of a mountain railway and reaches a height of over 650 meters near Campeda. The new section with the Enas-Monti tunnels was prepared for a double-track expansion.

In the 1980s it was planned to electrify the entire Sardinian standard gauge network. Due to its isolated location, a 3 kV AC voltage of 25 kV with 50 Hz should be used in contrast to the DC voltage system customary in Italy. However, the electrification work was slow, the only thing that happened was the erection of catenary masts in Cagliari station and on the adjacent kilometers of lines. The 25 electric locomotives of the series E491 and E492 built between 1986 and 1990 could therefore never be used on their intended routes.

A test operation for satellite-based train control with "ERSAT" is taking place on the line.
