Attractions
Two of the churches of Assemini are of particular cultural and historical value.
Parish Church of San Pietro
The parish church of San Pietro di Assemini is located in the center of the former rural town with an old pottery tradition. It was essentially built in the 16th century in a variant of the Gothic - Catalan style common in southern Sardinia . The single-nave church, with Capilla Mayor (main chapel) and side chapels, has a flat, horizontally ending and crenellated facade with sloping ante and a square tower , modeled on San Giacomo in Cagliari. The tower is one of the tallest on the island.
There are no inscriptions or documents that allow a chronology of the various construction phases. The original structure, including the facade, the bell tower (the top two floors from the 18th century) and the supporting arches, date from the late 15th or early 16th centuries. The side chapels were all added during the 16th century. The reconstruction of the presbytery and the addition of the transept did not take place before the end of the 16th century and led to a complete change in the nave (now with the same width and height). The nave has a ribbed vault , while the arms and the presbytery have barrel vaults .
Church of San Giovanni
Behind San Pietro is the pre-Romanesque Chiesa di San Giovanni (Battista), probably from the 10th century. It was first mentioned in a document in 1108. The Byzantine architecture of the Church of John the Baptist is of great importance for the entire Mediterranean region. The inscriptions in Greek preserve the memory of the senior judge of the Giudicato Cagliari.
The typical Byzantine central building (in the style of San Saturno in Cagliari) has a floor plan in the form of a Greek cross with 10 m long sides, a small apse in the east and barrel vaults in the side arms. The approximately five meter high facade is dominated by a small bell tower . The limestone outer walls are roughly worked in many parts, while the vaults were made with greater precision.
In the middle there is a high, square pseudo tambour without trumpets with a slender central dome . Inside there are Byzantine relief fragments , including a group of statue fragments with name inscriptions. "Torcotorio Archon" and "Getite Nispella" lived between the middle of the 10th and the middle of the 11th century. Their names are also evidenced by other documents during the transition between Byzantine rule and the judiciary .
economy
Assemini is the Heineken production site for the Birra Ichnusa lager . Numerous handicraft businesses for the production of pottery date back to the times of the Carthaginians .
traffic
Strada Statale 130 runs north of the municipality . Cagliari Airport is about five kilometers south of the town . The railway line from Cagliari to Golfo Aranci has the stops Assemini Carmine, Assemini and Assemini Santa Lucia, where the Servizio ferroviario metropolitano di Cagliari operates.
