San Saturno

San Saturno

The basilica of San Saturno , begun in the 5th century, was built in the Roman city of Carales, today's Cagliari . The remains of the former cross-dome building are among the oldest church ruins in the Mediterranean region and were the model for the (preserved) Byzantine churches in Sardinia .

The still-preserved east wing of the former central building stands on Piazza San Cosima in Cagliari's Villanova district. The church was not completed until the end of the 10th century, as construction was interrupted around 455 AD by the conquest of the Vandals . In the 17th century, the Spaniards destroyed the crumbling structure by removing most of the stones for the new construction of the cathedral. An Allied bomb hit in 1943 did the rest.
