Mangold brothers, 1904

The office building at Schadowstrasse 23 owned by the Mangold brothers in Düsseldorf was a “splendid example of a modern poster house ”. The building has not been preserved. The property was later rebuilt.

description

The house was extensively rebuilt and expanded in 1900 by the Düsseldorf architects Gottfried Wehling and Alois Ludwig . It had a majolica facade and was built in the Art Nouveau style. It came from the same time and was made of the same material as the famous Düsseldorf majolica house next to the Napoleonsberg . There was a “modern wooden shop window system” on the ground floor. and the facade on the upper floors was clad with “painted tiles” from Villeroy & Boch . These were “ figuratively carried out in glazed faience paneling with figurative representations that refer to the business of the owner”.

The Mangold brothers' shop was (according to the inscription) a glove factory that also sold travel and sporting goods, men's underwear and domestic and foreign fashion items. The faiences on the first floor depicted two women - one with a tennis racket, the other in evening wear - and two men with briefcases and in tuxedos. On the second floor, a stylized glove was depicted between the two middle windows.
