The Monserrato – Isili line is a narrow-gauge branch line in Sardinia . Originally, the railway line ran from the Cagliari station viale Bonaria to the small town of Isili , but since March 17, 2008 the light rail has been running on the former section between Cagliari piazza Repubblica and the new Monserrato station via San Gottardo .

history

On February 15, 1888, the Strade Ferrate Secondarie della Sardegna began operating on the Cagliari – Isili railway with a gauge of 950 mm. In 1921 the railway line went to the Ferrovie Complementari della Sardegna .

In 1943, during the Second World War , the inhabitants of Cagliari were able to take the train to safety from the Allied bombers.

From the 1960s, it became increasingly difficult to operate the railway lines in Sardinia. The new railway company Ferrovie della Sardegna was created through a merger in 1989 . She set up a new tourism concept and markets it as Trenino Verde , which is available again for cost reasons.

In 2010 and 2011, the route was re-routed on larger sections during a closure; this enables a speed increase due to larger curve radii.

In the current timetable, eight pairs of trains run to Mandas on weekdays , only five reach Isili. Trains are replaced by buses on Sundays and public holidays.

Trivia

The English writer DH Lawrence dedicated several pages to a train journey on this route in his book Sea and Sardinia ( The Sea and Sardinia , ISBN 978-3-257-21312-6 ) published in 1921 .
