The Mandas – Arbatax line is a branch line in Sardinia with a gauge of 950 mm. Only in the summer months from June to September there is passenger traffic under the name Trenino Verde .

history

The Italian railway company Società italiana per le Strade Ferrate Secondarie della Sardegna began planning in 1890 and three years later with the construction of the railway line to Arbatax . On April 20, 1894, the train service could be started. In 1921 the railway company Ferrovie Complementari della Sardegna took over the route.

In 1956, traffic on the branch line to Jerzu was stopped, and things also looked bad for the Mandas – Arbatax line. The railway is a railway infrastructure built with high technical effort and correspondingly complex to maintain . The route is relatively long due to numerous curves and the permissible speeds are low. Several times it was thought of stopping all traffic. Even the new diesel multiple units could not fundamentally improve the situation. In 1989 Ferrovie della Sardegna took over the business. First the infrastructure was renovated - also with funds from the European Community - but then on June 16, 1997 the regular passenger traffic was discontinued. Until September 28, 2014, the extremely scenic route was only used during the summer months by the “Trenino Verde” tourist train. The Sardinian government wants to completely shut down operations for cost reasons.

In June 2016, stress tests were carried out on the bridges between Seui and Niala, after which the Seui – Arbatax route approval was withdrawn. Opinions on the reasons for the shutdown vary widely. The parties involved (government, railway operator, mayor of the railway stations) hold each other responsible for the deficiencies. Given the facts, it is not foreseeable that the route will be reopened anytime soon. Information can only be found sporadically on the Internet on the homepage.

Trivia

At Lanusei a circular loop was created to gain height , with which the route crosses itself.
