The Villamassargia-Domusnovas-Carbonia Serbariu railway is a single-track, standard-gauge , non-electrified railway line on the Italian island of Sardinia .

history

The line was 21.7 kilometers long and is connected to the Decimomannu – Iglesias railway in Villamassargia . The line, completed in 1956, used to lead to the nearby Miniera di Serbariu coal mine .

Until 2011, the end point of the line was the standard gauge station Carbonia Stato in the city of Carbonia in south-west Sardinia. The route is regularly used by passenger trains from Ferrovie dello Stato (FS), the Italian State Railways. The operator is Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI), a wholly owned subsidiary of FS. The narrow-gauge line Iglesias – San Giovanni Suergiu also ran through Carbonia, but it has been closed for years.

On July 23, 2011, the Carbonia Stato station was closed to passenger traffic and the extension of the railway line to the new Carbonia Serbariu station was put into operation. The railway line is now 22.4 kilometers long to its new end point.
