The Sassari – Alghero railway is a narrow-gauge branch line in Sardinia , which is operated today by the Ferrovie della Sardegna (FdS) .

history

On March 1, 1889, the Società italiana per le Strade Ferrate Secondarie della Sardegna (SFSS) opened the railroad between Sassari and Alghero . When the SFSS got into economic difficulties and was dissolved in 1921, the Ferrovie Complementari della Sardegna (FCS) took over the traffic. Just a few years later, in 1933, the newly founded Strade Ferrate Sarde (SFS) took over the railway line that runs via Olmedo and Molafa. In 1971 the SFS came under state administration. The FdS emerged from the SFS through a merger in 1989.

Until 1988 the railway line was operated to the end point at that time, Alghero Porto (port). However, this five-kilometer section has now been closed.
