history
Sassari was founded in the Middle Ages by the inhabitants of the ancient city of Turris Libysonis (now Porto Torres ) who wanted to escape the frequent attacks of the Saracens . The first written record dates from the year 1131. Later Sassari, which belonged to the judiciary of Torres in the High Middle Ages , became the property of the naval power Pisa , which fell to Genoa in 1288 after the naval battle of Meloria . In 1294 the place became the first free city on the island, with its own constitution, the Statuti Sassaresi, which were in force until 1771. With the conquest of Sardinia by King James II of Aragon in 1325, the city came under the rule of the Crown of Aragon , which, however, was not able to finally consolidate possession until 1410. Since 1479 part of the new Kingdom of Spain , Sardinia was united as a kingdom with the Duchy of Savoy in 1718 . Its rulers became kings of the new national state of Italy in 1861 , into which Sassari has since been incorporated. The name of the city has been borne by a brigade of mechanized infantry in the Italian army since 1915, i.e. the tank grenadiers, the " Brigata Sassari ". It has consisted of three regiments since 2009 and has recently been used in the Iraq war ; She is currently part of the international troops in Afghanistan in the western Herat province .
