plans
Line 2, currently under construction, begins in the suburban town of Sorso , an important resort in the area, and will connect the terminus of Line 1 in Sassari with the villages of Li Punti and Baldinca . A first section of the line was opened on September 11, 2009, connecting the previous terminus of line 1 (Sassari station forecourt) with Santa Maria di Pisa.
The light rail, operated by the Azienda Regionale Sarda Trasporti company, now only runs in the area of the city of Sassari , although there are plans to expand the network. In the coming years these plans to link the suburbs of Sorso and Alghero with Sassari. Tram-train cars will operate on these routes .
Planned expansions
Planned extensions of the light rail network to Alghero and Sorso are to transform today's Sassari – Alghero line into a light rail with tram-train. Together with the expansion of the current railway line into a light rail, a railway ring between the Alghero-Fertilia airport and the city of Sassari is also planned.
