The Bergamo – Albino light rail line is a light rail line that connects the cities of Bergamo and Albino . It starts at Bergamo train station and runs on the route of the Ferrovia della Valle Seriana, which existed until 1967 . This formerly continued to Clusone and Parre .
history
Already between 1912 and 1953 the cities of Bergamo and Albino were connected by an overland tram , which ran in the street space of the road between the two cities. It was meter-gauge and electrified with 600 V DC, just like Bergamo's urban tram network at that time.
In 1993 the Italian Parliament passed a law that brought about the transfer of the real estate and infrastructure of the Ferrovie della Valle Seriana e della Valle Brembana to the province of Bergamo. The aim was to build a tram or metro network.
After various discussions, a modern tram (metrotranvia) turned out to be the best solution. On July 20, 2000, the municipality and province of Bergamo founded the Tramvie Elettriche Bergamasche (TEB) company. This was to plan and build the first tram line, called T1 - using the route of the former railway line.
The line between Bergamo and Alzano Centro was inaugurated on April 24, 2009 and opened to traffic the following day. The long construction period was explained by the bankruptcy of the contracted construction company and the collapse of a tunnel. The opening of the entire route to Albino happened on June 10, 2009.
The TEB was entrusted with the operation of the tram line until 2011. Subsequently, all public transport in the province of Bergamo should be put out to tender.
Passenger numbers
The following passenger numbers were achieved in the first year of operation of the tram:
- 2.3 million passengers in total;
- 300,000 passengers a month during school hours;
- 10,000 to 11,000 passengers on working days;
- 4000 passengers on Sundays

Infrastructure
The line is a double-track above - ground light rail line with a length of 12.5 km and 16 stops. The track is partly equipped with Vignole rails and partly with grooved rails and has a track width of 1435 mm.
The entire route runs on its own track. The level crossings are secured with light signals. The top speed is 70 km / h, which means an average cruising speed of 24.95 km / h is achieved.
35% of the route is laid out as grass track.
vehicles
The current fleet consists of 14 five-part low-floor - articulated railcar type AnsaldoBreda Sirio . The interior was designed by Krizia , the exterior was designed by Pininfarina .
In addition, the tram company has a road- rail vehicle for maintenance and emergency trips as well as a tram trailer for maintenance work on the route.
Timetable
The line is operated every 15 minutes on weekdays and Saturdays outside the school holidays. During rush hour on school days, a train runs every five to ten minutes. Every 30 minutes is offered on Saturdays during the school holidays as well as on Sundays and public holidays.
The daily operating time is from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.
99% of the journeys are delayed by less than 5 minutes, 98% by less than 2 minutes.
