history

Tram in Messina

Between 1917 and 1951 there was already a tram network in the city. After a break of more than 50 years, the modern Messina tram opened on April 3, 2003. A long planning and construction period had preceded this.

The Gazzi terminus was not put into operation until later; initially the trains ended at the Bonino stop .

The tram replaced the earlier bus line 28 on the same route and also kept its line number.

On September 15, 2018, the mayor of the city announced that the tram would be shut down in June 2019 due to low passenger numbers. This shutdown was averted by the investment of 100 million euros announced in April 2019 by the Italian Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure. The funds made available are to be used for an extension to the north and for further improvements to infrastructure and vehicles.

vehicles

The fleet includes 15 modern low - floor articulated multiple units made up of five Alstom Cityway elements . In the absence of a functioning workshop, a large number of the vehicles were parked ready for scrap in 2018.
