The Metropolitana di Catania is the metro of the city of Catania on the island of Sicily and, after the Seville metro, the second southernmost metro in Europe. The operator is Ferrovia Circumetnea (FCE) .

history

The Metropolitana di Catania was opened on June 27, 1999 between Borgo and Porto as a standard-gauge railway and replaced the Ferrovia Circumetnea with a gauge of 950 millimeters , which had the same line layout but was on the surface . Remnants of the former narrow-gauge railway can still be found in the streets of Catania. The Ferrovia Circumetnea now operates both the “Metropolitana” and an approximately 110-kilometer-long railway line in a 950-millimeter gauge, which circles the Etna volcano from Catania .

On December 20, 2016, another branch line from the Galatea underground station to Piazza Stesicoro on Via Etnea was put into operation. With the opening of the new section, which comprises two stations, the city center of Catania will be opened up for the first time by the metro.

The original route to the port will continue to be used, but the Stazione FS underground station at Catania Centrale train station has been closed and replaced by the new Giovanni XXIII underground station .

The new Nesima – Borgo section was opened on March 30, 2017, and official passenger service began on March 31, 2017.

Further line extensions in the western and southern sections of the metro are currently under construction or planned.

route

Overground section of the line at the port near the Catania Centrale train station.

The subway connects the current terminus of the narrow-gauge railway Circumetnea in the suburb of Borgo with the old town of Catania and the port. It consists of a single line, is 5.5 km long and has seven stations. Behind the Galatea metro station, the line splits into two branches.

The older branch leads to the port of Catania. The route becomes single-track behind Galatea and reaches the surface via a ramp. To the terminus Porto the 1.8 km long route runs mainly along the coast and the tracks of the railway line Messina-Siracusa along.

The double-track section Nesima-Stesicoro runs completely underground. The travel times between the end stations are approx. 10 minutes each.

vehicles

For the Metro Catania 8 double railcars were procured, which were built by Firema Trasporti . The trains have a driver's cab on both sides and are equipped with a Scharfenberg coupler at the ends of the car . The passenger area has been designed with longitudinal seating and is air-conditioned.

business

The underground runs Monday to Saturday from 6:40 a.m. to 3 p.m. every 10 minutes, then every 15 minutes until the end of operation: Mon. – Sat. at 9:24 p.m., on Sundays at 12:30 a.m. The company is closed on Sundays and public holidays. The tickets are valid on all Ferrovia Circumetnea railways, but not on urban buses. The stations are partially provided with platform barriers.

Planning

In 2019, the network in the western section of the route will expand by two more stations and will reach the city limits of Misterbianco at Monte Po station . In the city center, civil engineering work is currently taking place for a southern extension of the route to the future Palestro station . To the south, the metro is to connect Catania airport in the long term . Extensions to the suburbs of Misterbianco and Paternò are also planned.
