The Bergamo railway station ( Italian : Stazione di Bergamo ) is the station of the northern Italian city of Bergamo . It is operated by the Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI), an organizational unit of the Ferrovie dello Stato . From 2001 to 2018, the Centostazioni company was responsible for marketing and leasing the retail space .
The station is located south of the city center and is the starting point for the Lecco – Bergamo , Seregno – Bergamo , Treviglio – Bergamo and Bergamo – Brescia railway lines . It has seven platform tracks, five of which are equipped with a platform roof. The station is also equipped with extensive track systems for freight traffic, which are separated from passenger traffic.
history
After the construction of the railway line from Milan to Venice ( Ferdinand's Railway ) began in 1840 , Bergamo asked for a connection to this line, which was about 25 kilometers away from the city via Treviglio , Chiari and Coccaglio .
After long discussions it was decided that the part of the route Treviglio - Coccaglio should not be diverted via Chiari but via Bergamo , with an extended course of around 20 km.
On October 12, 1857, the station built by the Austrian Southern Railway Company was opened together with the Treviglio – Bergamo – Coccaglio line. In 1863 the line to Lecco was added.
The direct route via Chiari was built later and opened in 1878. Since then, the Treviglio – Bergamo and Bergamo – Brescia lines have been downgraded to branch lines , and Bergamo station has been separated from the main railway network.
Up to the 1960s two local railways also operated, the Ferrovia Valle Brembana and the Ferrovia Valle Seriana ; In 2009 the Bergamo – Albino light rail was built on this second .
