List of train stations in Italy |
The Milano Porta Garibaldi train station is a train station in the Italian city of Milan . It is the second largest station in the city after the Milano Centrale railway station, which is served by regional trains and also by some long-distance trains; For example, four pairs of Eurostar Italia trains stop at Porta Garibaldi in order to save the need to change direction in Centrale and thus offer the fastest connection between Turin and Rome in 4 hours and 10 minutes.
It is frequented by around 25 million passengers every year. It is operated by the FS subsidiary Centostazioni , which manages 100 medium-sized train stations. In addition to Trenitalia, it is also served by the Lombard regional train company Trenord .
Location and architecture
The train station is located near the eponymous Porta Garibaldi on the Piazza Sigmund Freud . It consists of two floors: on the upper floor there is a terminal station with twelve tracks, next to it a through station , the eight tracks of which lead directly after the station into the Garibaldi tunnel to the area in front of the Centrale station; In the basement there is a stop for passers-by with two tracks with an island platform. The Passante is an underground cross -city line of the Milan S-Bahn , which affects the city center, but does not go to the Central Station.
history
The above-ground station was opened in 1961 to replace the third Porta Nuova station, about 800 meters to the east. It was used to take up traffic from northeastern Lombardy - such as Novara or Varese. Thanks to a new connecting tunnel (so-called Passantino ) to the apron of the Central Station and to Greco Pirelli , the station could after a few years also serve as the terminus for the routes to the north, east and south.
On December 21, 1997 the underground stop (officially: Milano Porta Garibaldi Passante ) was opened, which has been used since 2004 for the " Linee S " (suburban lines).
Between 2004 and 2006 it underwent a major renovation program, including making it brighter and safer with a lighting design.
