The Italo - Nuovo Trasporto Viaggiatori SpA (NTV) is a private Italian railway company . Since April 28, 2012, it has been offering high-speed traffic between major Italian cities in competition with the state-run Trenitalia .

history

NTV was founded in 2006 by four Italian industrialists, including Luca Cordero di Montezemolo , then Chairman of the Board of Directors of Ferrari and Fiat , and Diego Della Valle , owner of Tod's Group .

Trains

AGV 575

An .Italo AGV from NTV in Napoli Centrale station

In March 2008, NTV ordered 25 units of the new electrically operated high-speed multiple unit AGV from Alstom, France . In November 2008 the decision was made to run the trains under the brand name .italo . 17 of the 25 vehicles designated as the 575 series were built in La Rochelle , eight more in Savigliano, Italy . They offer 462 seats in 11 carriages over a length of 200 m and reach a top speed of 300 km / h (below 25 kV alternating current). The drive power of 7.5 MW is distributed over ten permanent magnet electric motors.

The dark red trains, the interior of which was designed by Giorgio Giugiaro , originally had three car classes : Smart , Prima and Club . A smart class car was equipped with screens on the ceiling as a smart cinema (" cinema car "). In the meantime, there is another class, called eXtra Large , between Smart and Prima , with seating like Prima , but lower in price.

Italo EVO

The Italo EVO is a further development of the ETR 600 , also from Alstom, from the Pendolino series. These trains are 187 meters long and can accommodate 472 passengers in 7 cars. The maximum speed is 250 km / h, contrary to what the name of the series suggests, they do not have tilting technology. The first 4 of these trains were used in December 2017, and 22 units had been purchased by 2018.

The trains are serviced in a workshop near Nola near Naples by the vehicle manufacturer Alstom. The facility covers an area of 140,000 m 2 and comprises eleven tracks as well as a 55,000 m 2 maintenance hall. It employs 180 people.

Ownership and Financing

The original share capital was one million euros. At the beginning of 2008, Banca Intesa Sanpaolo entered 20 percent of the company's capital, for which it spent between 49 and 62 million euros. She also granted NTV a credit line of 750 million euros. The President Giuseppe Sciarrone still held a capital share of 4%, with Montezemolo, Della Valle and the entrepreneur Gianni Punzo each accounting for 24% . In October 2008, the French state railway SNCF acquired a 20% stake in the company for 80 million euros.

In March 2015, the owners of NTV and their shares were presented on the company's website as follows:

  • 35 percent MDP Holding (Diego Della Valle, Luca di Montezemolo, Gianni Punzo in equal parts),
  • 20 percent Intesa Sanpaolo (bank),
  • 20 percent SNCF,
  • 15 percent Assicurazioni Generali (insurance),
  • 5 percent Alberto Bombassei,
  • 5 percent Isabella Seragnoli,
  • 1.5 percent Giuseppe Sciarrone.

On February 7, 2018, the American infrastructure fund Global Infrastructure Partners announced that it would take over .Italo for € 1.98 billion. Actually, the railway company wanted to bring around 40% of the share capital to the Milan stock exchange in March. The IPO is now called off, always provided that the competition and cartel authorities of the EU approve the takeover.

business development

According to the original plan, the company wanted to achieve a market share of 20 percent by 2015, corresponding to 30,000 passengers per day or 3.3 billion passenger kilometers annually. The breakeven point should be reached in 2013 (with a turnover of 396 million euros).

In fact, 2013 only achieved a turnover of 239.5 million euros and ended the year with a loss of 105.8 million euros (before taxes) and 77.6 million euros (after taxes). In 2014, NTV expected to be in the black for 2016 at the earliest.

In September 2014 it was reported that NTV was experiencing major economic problems. In view of the high losses and a debt of 781 million euros, negotiations are being carried out with the banks to stretch payments. It is also intended to lay off around 300 of the 1,000 or so employees. According to the resolution of September 24, 2014, debts are to be restructured and the owners make new contributions. On April 10, 2015, there was an eight-hour strike at NTV because of the planned layoff of 246 employees . The restructuring was completed in 2015.

Since December 2015, shuttle buses have been operating under the name Italobus to the train stations of Milano Rogoredo, Reggio Emilia, Napoli Afragola and Salerno. These buses can only be used in conjunction with a train ticket.

In 2017, Italo NTV finally achieved a record result with 12.8 million passengers, which generated € 455 million in sales and an operating result of € 156 million.
