The terminus station Firenze Santa Maria Novella ( Firenze SMN for short ) is the central station of Florence , named after the church of Santa Maria Novella . It is an important link on the TEN axis Berlin-Palermo , as it links the high-speed lines Bologna-Florence and Florence-Rome . However, with the opening of the new high-speed station Firenze Belfiore , which is currently under construction, it will lose this function.
The building, which is considered an outstanding example of modern architecture of its time, was designed in 1932 by the group of architects Gruppo Toscano (Tuscan Group), which also included Giovanni Michelucci and Italo Gamberini. In a competition organized by the city of Florence, Gruppo Toscano prevailed over more than a hundred other architecture firms. The new station was built between 1932 and 1934.
The Toscano group was responsible for the design of the main front building of the station. The platforms and benches etc. were designed by the official architect of the Ministry of Transport, Angiolo Mazzoni .
The station was designed to replace the aging Maria Antonia station from 1848 and to act as the new “gateway to the city center”.
A memorial plaque was put up at platform 8 on March 8, 1981 to commemorate the more than a thousand Jews who were deported from here to the Nazis' concentration camps on March 8, 1944 .
A musical memorial was placed at the train station by Pupo in his song of the same name.
