Firenze Belfiore is a planned high-speed train station in the Belfiore district of Florence . The architectural design comes from Norman Foster , while Arup is responsible for the engineering . On the surface, a stop for line 2 of the Florence tram is planned, which will connect Belfiore station with the previous Santa Maria Novella central station and Florence airport . Operations were originally scheduled to start in summer 2016. However, the tunnel construction work has not yet started and the potential opening date has been postponed to summer 2020. It should be checked beforehand whether the tram should alternatively receive a tunnel under Florence. In autumn 2016, voices increased that the Foster station should not be built after all. According to more recent information, the station should be completed in 2022 .
The new railway tunnel is to cross under Florence from north ( Firenze Castello station ) to east ( Campo di Marte ). It is intended to link the high-speed line Bologna – Florence and the high-speed line Florence – Rome . In addition to the acceleration of long-distance traffic, routes for local and regional traffic should also be freed up on the existing old routes.
