The Florence Airport ( Italian Aeroporto di Firenze-Peretola "Amerigo Vespucci" ; IATA Code : FLR , ICAO code : LIRQ ) is an Italian commercial airport in Florence . Since it was considered by many to be too small for the needs of the capital of Tuscany , the airport operator presented plans for the construction of a new modern terminal in 2009, the first modules of which went into operation in 2012. After very long debates, it was decided in 2014 to build a new runway .

Transport links

The airport, located four kilometers north-west of the city center, is connected to the Firenze Santa Maria Novella train station by bus ( Vola in bus ). The bus runs every 30 minutes during the day. The airport can only be reached on foot by crossing a two-lane street with no pedestrian crossing. SITA offers a shuttle bus to the main train station.

Line 2 of the Florence tram has been connecting the airport with the main train station and the historic old town since February 2019. A trial run was originally planned from autumn 2016 and the opening in 2017.

history

The first airfield was set up in 1910 in the Campo di Marte district (Marsfeld) - an area that is now used as a football field. When this no longer met the requirements in the 1920s, work began on a new building between Florence and Sesto Fiorentino in 1928 . The new Florence-Peretola Airport went into operation in the early 1930s and expanded in the following years.

terminal

In 1939 a 1000 meter long asphalt runway was opened. In the 1950s, Alitalia first offered scheduled flights to Rome, Venice and Milan. Today's airport operating company Aeroporto di Firenze SpA was founded in 1984. In that year, major expansion work began: The runway 05/23 was extended to 1,400 meters, modern navigation systems were installed and the terminal was converted and expanded. In 1990 the airport was named after the Florentine navigator and explorer Amerigo Vespucci . The expansion of the airport continued in the 1990s. In 2001 the plant received an EN ISO 9001/2000 certification.

In the summer of 2012 a first part of the new Terminal 2 was opened. This is a check-in area with 40 counters on the first floor of the new building.

Since the 1750 meter long runway 05/23 can only be approached by aircraft up to the size of the Boeing 737-700 and Airbus A319 , there have long been proposals for the construction of a new, 2000 meter long runway parallel to the A11 motorway . After some bitter discussions, the construction of the new runway 12/30 was finally decided in 2014. In the course of this relocation of the runway, a redesign and extension of the apron should also take place. In the summer of 2016 the plans were stopped by the regional administrative court Tribunale Amministrativo Regionale .

Airlines and Destinations

Since December 2012, Florence has been one of Vueling's twelve bases , which flies to seven destinations from here. Connections with European capitals are offered by a number of classic airlines and their subsidiaries. From the German-speaking countries, flights to Florence are offered from Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Munich, Zurich and Vienna, and also from Berlin during the season.

Because of the aforementioned relatively small size of Florence Airport, Pisa Airport handles a large part of the commercial air traffic in Tuscany.

Incidents

  • On 30 July 1997 put an ATR-42 of the Air Littoral ( air vehicle registration number F-GPYE while landing at the airport Florence) clearly too late and too fast. It rolled over the end of the only 1030 m short available landing stretch and crashed into the embankment of the adjacent motorway. One of the pilots was killed, the other 16 occupants survived (see also Air Littoral Flight 701 ) .
