The Salerno-Pontecagnano Airport ( Italian Aeroporto di Salerno-Pontecagnano “Costa d'Amalfi” ) is an Italian airport near Salerno .
Transport links
The airport is located about twelve kilometers southeast of the city in the area of the municipality of Pontecagnano Faiano , on the coastal plain between Salerno and Battipaglia , on state road 18 and the A2 motorway . There are bus connections to the airport, a rail connection is planned.
Infrastructure
In the northeast of the airport area there is an apron and other facilities for general aviation , in the east the area for commercial air traffic with a small passenger terminal . In a south-westerly direction there is a runway that is currently 1,654 meters long and is to be extended to 2020 meters in the coming years. The runway does not have a parallel taxiway .
Traffic development
It is a regional airport that is intended to better develop the south of Campania , to relieve the Naples airport , which is around 50 km away , and to promote tourism on the nearby Amalfi Coast . The commercial success, which has so far largely failed, is made dependent on the planned extension of the runway. The airport was approached between 2008 and 2010 by VolaSalerno and Air Dolomiti . In 2010 and 2011, Alitalia linked Salerno with Rome and Milan . Danube Wings offered seasonal charter flights . There is currently no regular operation.
history
Salerno Airport was set up as a military airfield in 1926 and was used primarily for training purposes until 1943. Pier Luigi Nervi built a hangar here, among other things . Army aviators , Carabinieri and the fire brigade used it after the Second World War . In 1952 the Aeroclub Salerno was founded, later also a school for parachutists . In 1962 the Kennedy family landed here during a stay in Italy. From the 1980s a new tower was built, the runway was extended and the terminal facilities expanded.
