geography

Battipaglia is located on the Tusciano river in the fertile Sele plain . The municipality stretches from the coast on the Gulf of Salerno to the first foothills of the Monti Picentini . Due to the strong population increase in recent years, the area is heavily sprawled.

The neighboring towns are: Bellizzi , Eboli , Montecorvino Rovella , Olevano sul Tusciano and Pontecagnano Faiano .

history

Castelluccio di Battipaglia

Battipaglia was founded as an agricultural colony in 1858 when the marshy plain of the Sele began to be reclaimed. But it was not until March 28, 1929 that it was separated from the municipalities of Montecorvino Rovella and Eboli as an independent municipality. It has had municipal rights since 1960.

Castelluccio Castle , north of the city center, has a much older history and was first mentioned in 1080.

In 1943 Battipaglia was almost completely destroyed in bombing by the Allies.
