Scala is an Italian commune with 1522 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Salerno in the Campania region . It belonged to the mountain commune Comunità Montana Penisola Amalfitana, which was dissolved in 2008 .

Location and dates

The place is 360 m high, opposite the village of Ravello , with which it is connected by a road. The districts of Scala are San Pietro, Santa Caterina, Campidoglio, Minuta , Pontone . The neighboring municipalities are: Agerola ( NA ), Amalfi , Atrani , Gragnano (NA), Pimonte (NA) and Ravello .

history

Scala experienced its greatest heyday in the Middle Ages, when it was part of the Maritime Republic of Amalfi . From 987 to 1603 Scala was a separate bishopric, then it was united with the diocese of Ravello . Fra Gerardo Sasso comes from Scala , who founded the Order of St. John around 1100 in Jerusalem to care for sick crusaders and travelers, from whom the sovereign Order of Malta emerged. The local saint is San Lorenzo , his patron saint is celebrated annually on August 10th. In Scala, St. Alfonso Liguori founded the Order of the Redemptorists in 1732 .

Attractions

  • Cathedral: The most important sight in Scala is the cathedral. It dates back to 1169 and was later redesigned in the baroque style.
  • SS Annunziata Church: Also noteworthy is the SS Annunziata Church in the Minuta district . Roman spolia are worked into the portal of the church , and the pillars that support the vaults also date from Roman times. In the crypt there are frescoes from around 1200 depicting a child miracle of St. Nicholas .
  • Former Benedictine nunnery of San Cataldo : The former Benedictine nunnery is located in the district of Minuta. It was bought and restored in 1908 by Carl Wiinstedt (1875–1932), a Danish traveler to Italy, and now enables Danish artists and scientists to study on the Amalfi Coast.
