According to legend, St. Cataldus (Italian: San Cataldo ) (* around 600 in Ireland ) was Bishop of Taranto .

On his return from a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, he is said to have come to Taranto and was ordained bishop there. He was buried in the Cathedral of San Cataldo . The body was found in 1094 during the reconstruction work after the destruction by the Saracens . The cathedral was then consecrated to him. The cult for the saint is widespread in southern Italy.

Cataldus is the patron saint of Taranto in Puglia , Brienza in Basilicata , Cariati in Calabria , Cagnano Varano in Puglia, Corato in Puglia, San Cataldo in Sicily , Supino in Lazio and Massa Lubrense in Campania .
