The Cathedral of San Cataldo in Taranto ( Apulia ) is the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Taranto . On October 28, 1964, Pope John XXIII gave her. the honorary title of a minor basilica .

The style is a mixture of Romanesque and late baroque , columns and capitals come from demolished buildings from different epochs, which arose from already existing architectural structures.

The cathedral from 1071 stands on the ruins of a pagan temple and suffered destruction and was rebuilt several times (e.g. in 1713 the facade was rebuilt in Baroque style).

Church interior

The three-aisled church has a wooden coffered ceiling from the 17th century in the central nave . The side aisles are separated on each side by eight different ancient columns with different capitals. The remains of the floor mosaic, which are still present in numerous places and are reminiscent of the floor mosaic from Otranto, are remarkable. The chapel of San Cataldo is particularly worth seeing , with marble mosaics and statues from the 18th century by Fanzago from Naples and Leombardelli from Carrara. On the ceiling of the chapel there are frescoes by De Matteis depicting the life of this Irish Bishop of Taranto. In the chapel is the "Cappellone", a marble shrine. The crypt , actually the previous church from the 10th / 11th. Century, also with antique columns and Byzantine frescoes from the 12th century.

There are also other churches of this patron saint, for example in Modena and Palermo .
