Brienza is a southern Italian municipality ( comune ) with 3967 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Potenza in Basilicata . The municipality is located about 22.5 kilometers southwest of Potenza on the Pergola and borders directly on the province of Salerno . Brienza is part of the Comunità montana Melandro .

history

The village of Brienza is a Longobard foundation from the 7th century. Presumably it was created after the establishment of a Benedictine abbey. At the turn of the 7th to the 8th century, a St. Martin's Church was built.
