Atella is a southern Italian municipality ( comune ) with 3812 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Potenza in Basilicata . The municipality is located about 29.5 kilometers north-northwest of Potenza in the Valle di Vitalba.

history

The current settlement of Atella was created between 1320 and 1330 through the reforms of John II of Lorraine . Already in Roman times there was a town-like town called Celenna nearby.

Economy and Transport

The Strada Statale 93 Appulo Lucana runs through the municipality from Barletta to Potenza. In parallel, Strada Statale 658 Potenza- Melfi also touches the municipality.

The Aglianico del Vulture is grown in the municipality . Vulture olive oil is made from local olives.
