history
Settlements from the 6th to 4th centuries BC emerged in the area of Banzi. The name goes back to ancient Bantia. The present city was built over the remains of the old settlements. In 767 the Benedictine monastery of Santa Maria was founded. Residential buildings for workers were built around the monastery, which reached its peak in the 12th century.
The mayor of Banzi, Giuseppe Garzillo (from the Berlusconi Forza Italia party ), hit the headlines in autumn 2008 because he had faked and billed numerous business appointments. He was succeeded by Nicola Vertone (Centro Sinistra).
Attractions
The church and the monastery of Santa Maria are in the area of the old Benedictine abbey. The monastery changed religious orders several times. The new monastery and church were built in the 17th century.
