San Paolo Albanese (in Arbëresh , IPA : [ar'bəreʃ] : Shën Pali Arbëreshë , called Casalnuovo Lucano from 1936 to 1962 ) is a southern Italian municipality founded by Arbëresh ( IPA : [ar'bəreʃ] ) in the province of Potenza in the region Basilicata and has 228 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).

location

The municipality is located about 80.5 kilometers southeast of Potenza in the Pollino National Park , belongs to the Comunità montana Val Sarmento and borders directly on the province of Cosenza in Calabria .

The political groups include Cornalita and Felicita. The neighboring municipalities are Alessandria del Carretto , Cersosimo , Noepoli , San Costantino Albanese and Terranova di Pollino .

San Paolo Albanese was founded around 1534 by Albanian immigrants ( Arbëresh ).

Today the Albanian language of the ancestors is still spoken fluently in San Paolo Albanese and its inhabitants belong to the Albanian ethnic and linguistic minority of Italy, which by law 482 “For the protection of historical language minorities” of December 15, 1999 Legge 15 Dicembre 1999, n. 482 - Norms in materia di tutela delle minoranze linguistiche storiche (German: regulations on the protection of historical linguistic minorities).
