Viggianello (in the local dialect: Vingianieddu ) is a southern Italian municipality ( comune ) with 2867 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Potenza in Basilicata . The municipality is located about 77.5 kilometers south-southeast of Potenza and borders directly on the province of Cosenza . Viggianello is part of the Comunità Montana Alto Sinni and is located in the middle of the Parco nazionale del Pollino . The Lao also has its source in the municipality .
Viggianello is part of the I borghi più belli d'Italia association (The Most Beautiful Places in Italy).
The first mention is that of the place Castrum Byanella on Via Popilia . In the Bull of Alfano of 1079, the Archbishop of Salerno mentions the place Vineanellum . In a document written in Greek, however, the place appears again as Byanelli .
The place had a train station called Rotonda-Viggianello on the Lagonegro – Spezzano Albanese railway .
