Acerenza is an Italian municipality with 2268 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Potenza in Basilicata and is a member of the association I borghi più belli d'Italia (The most beautiful places in Italy).
Vines for the red wine Aglianico del Vulture are grown in Acerenza .
The neighboring municipalities are Cancellara , Forenza , Genzano di Lucania , Oppido Lucano , Palazzo San Gervasio and Pietragalla .
history
Due to its strategic position 800 meters above sea level, acerenza was the prey of many invaders. In 318 BC Chr. Was the place back then, conquered by the Roman consul Junius Bulbuco Aceruntia. It was later occupied by the Goths and the Lombards , who eventually fortified Acerenza. In 1061 it was conquered by the Normans under Robert Guiskard .
Since at least 499 Acerenza was the seat of a bishop , according to legend, the first bishop was appointed by Simon Peter . Pope Nicholas II elevated the diocese to the Archdiocese of Acerenza .
From the 16th century, Acerenza belonged to the Marchese di Galatone, to whom Philip II of Spain conferred the title of Duke of Acerenza on April 12, 1593. The title came to the Princes Belmonte through marriage, in whose family it is still run today.
Attractions
The Cathedral of Acerenza , start of construction in 1059, contains a famous marble bust of the Emperor Julian .
