Avigliano is an Italian commune in the province of Potenza in the Basilicata region .

Location and dates

Avigliano is 18 km northwest of Potenza . 11,081 people live here (as of December 31, 2019).

The neighboring municipalities are: Atella , Bella , Filiano , Forenza , Pietragalla , Potenza and Ruoti .

Avigliano is on the Potenza - Melfi railway line . The travel time to Potenza is around 20 to 25 minutes depending on the train. Avigliano does not have a direct motorway connection.

history

The place is first mentioned in 181 BC. Mentioned in connection with the Villia law . The Villia family settled in the Avigliano area.

Attractions

Three churches are particularly noteworthy. In the Castel Lagopesole district, the castle of the same name stands on a hill between the Bradano and Ofanto rivers .

Santa Maria del Carmine Church

S. Maria degli Angeli church

The church is also called Chiesa Madre . The church originally dates from the 11th century. Over the years this has been expanded and rebuilt several times. There were restorations in 1583, 1614, 1661 and 1811. Since May 4, 1758, San Vito has been patron saint of the church and patron saint of Avigliano alongside Maria.

The church has three naves and an apse in the shape of a Latin cross. Under the dome a staircase leads to the presbytery. Here are eleven altars from the 19th century. There are valuable paintings in the sacristy and in the parish office.

Church and monastery of S. Maria degli Angeli

The church is also called the Reformed Church. The church was built in the 17th century. Inside, the central nave consists of a barrel vault and a side nave with cross vaults. The colonnades and the vaults are decorated with stucco. There are also several Baroque altars in the church and some oil paintings from the 17th century.

Sanctuary of the Madonna del Carmine

The church is located on the mountain of the same name north of Avigliano. The church can be reached via a nine-kilometer road. A religious festival is celebrated here on July 15 and 16 each year.

Castel Lagopesole

The previous building of Castel Lagopesole was built in the 8th century and burned down in the 12th century. The castle was rebuilt under the Hohenstaufen family . The large rectangular structure has two inner courtyards, a larger one (northern) and a smaller, roughly square (southern) one. In the small courtyard is one of humpback blocks disguised keep with remarkable architectural sculpture, of the Hohenstaufen castles in Alsace and Palatinate recalls. A museum and the Istituto Internazionale di Studi Federiciani (IISF, research institute on the history of Staufer culture under Frederick II ) of the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNRS, National Research Council of Italy) have been housed in the Castel since 2000 .
