Marsicovetere is a southern Italian municipality ( comune ) with 5583 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Potenza in Basilicata . The municipality is located about 28 kilometers south of Potenza in the Val d'Agri. Marsicovetere belongs to the Comunità Montana Alto Agri .

history

The place must have existed in Roman antiquity. Strabon mentions a Vertina that must have been in the municipality near Grumentum . The castle complex can be traced back to 1118. In 1575 the monastery of Santa Maria di Constantinopoli was built.

The Strada Statale 598 di Fondo Valle d'Agri runs through the municipality from Policoro to Atena Lucana .
