Castelmezzano is a southern Italian municipality ( comune ) in the province of Potenza in Basilicata with about 756 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). The municipality is located about 23.5 kilometers southeast of Potenza on the Parco naturale di Gallipoli Cognato - Piccole Dolomiti Lucane and belongs to the Comunità Montana Alto Basento . In the 6th and 5th centuries BC First Greek colonists settled on the Basento and founded the city of Maudoron . When the Saracens ravaged the villages in southern Italy in the 10th century, the displaced inhabitants settled on the rock and founded today's Castelmezzano.
