Eugenio Santoro (born August 27, 1920 in Castelmezzano , Italy , † May 13, 2006 in Courtelary , Switzerland ) was a Swiss sculptor and painter .

Life

The trained carpenter Santoro, born in 1920 in Castelmezzano in southern Italy, was deployed as a soldier in Albania and northern Greece in 1940 . After his release from a German prisoner of war camp and returning to his homeland, Santoro immigrated to Switzerland in 1964, where he worked in a chocolate factory, given the prevailing poverty. After doing a painting for his employer in 1979, he turned to art. The Tagblatt counts him among the most important Art Brut artists

Works

Many of his works, made from tree trunks, life-size and sometimes over-human-sized wooden figures, human and animal figures with distorted facial features, can be seen in the Collection de l ' Art Brut in Lausanne . He was posthumously represented with works in the exhibition Comme des bêtes - Ours, chat, cochon & Cie in the Musée cantonal des beaux-arts de Lausanne .
