The Setarchidae are a family of small to medium-sized marine fish from the order of the perch-like (Perciformes). Setarchidae are distributed worldwide in temperate and tropical zones. They live at depths of 150 to 2000 meters and are 13 to 25 centimeters long.
features
The sideline is a continuous channel that is covered by thin, membranous scales. The cycloid scales are small. The skull is thin and cavernous, the bones poorly ossified . A swim bladder is usually present, but absent or greatly reduced in ectreposebastes . The lateral ethmoid and the prevomer are in contact, the prevomer and palatal bone are dentate. There are 7 Branchiostegal rays . Usually the number of vertebrae is 24. The soft rays of the caudal fin (caudal), the 5 rays of the pelvic fins (ventral) and the soft rays of the dorsal fin (dorsal) and anal fin (anal) are branched. The pectoral fins (pectorals) have 18 to 25 fin rays, rays 2–3 to 15–18 are branched in adults .
- Fin formula : Dorsal XI – XIII / 5–11, Anale III / 4–7.
Taxonomy and systematics
The subfamily Setarchinae was created in 1943 by Matsubara and redefined in 1966 by Eschmeyer and Collette with 4 species in the genera Ectreposebastes , Lioscorpius and Setarches . Ishida reclassified the scorpionfish relatives (Scorpaenoidei) in 1994 and raised the subfamily to the new family Setarchidae.
The family currently comprises three genera with a total of seven species :

- Ectreposebastes niger ( Fourmanoir , 1971)

- Lioscorpius longiceps Günther , 1880
- Lioscorpius trifasciatus Last, Yearsley & Motomura , 2005
