Lioscorpius is a genus of bony fish inthe Setarchidae family .

features

Lioscorpius species reach a standard length of about 13 cm. The first spine of the pre-orbital lacrimal bone is greatly reduced. The anal fin (anal) of Lioscorpius is supported by 2 hard and 6 soft rays ( Lioscorpius longiceps ) or 3 hard and 5 soft rays ( Lioscorpius trifasciatus ), the pectoral fins (pectorals) have 23 to 25 fin rays. The last 2 to 4 spine rays of the first dorsal fin (dorsal) are small, they often lie under the skin. The body is relatively straight, the height is 21 to 28% of the standard length. The interorbital width (distance between the eyes) is 6 to 7% of the standard length. However, the species seem to be morphometrically different. The swim bladder is well developed with large gas glands . The species are pink or pale pink in color.

distribution

Lioscorpius longiceps was collected in numerous places in the Indo-West Pacific region from Japan to West Australia . The first described specimens of Lioscorpius trifasciatus come from the western Pacific, Australia. The holotype comes from the Coral Sea , paratypes also from the Tasman Sea . There is more evidence from New Caledonia , Vanuatu and Fiji in the southwestern Pacific. At least off Vanuatu and Fiji, the two species seem to occur sympatric , possibly also in the northern Coral Sea.

Taxonomy and systematics

By 2005, before the first description of Lioscorpius trifasciatus by load, Yearsley and Motomura, was Lioscorpius as monotypic with Lioscorpius longiceps the only way for the moment that includes. Genus two types :

Research history

In 1880 the then new genus with the species Lioscorpius longiceps was procured by Albert Carl Ludwig Gotthilf Günther in his Report on the Shore Fishes during the Voyage of HMS Challenger in the Years 1873-1876. first described . The report appeared in the Report on the scientific results of the voyage of HMS Challenger during the years 1873-76 under the command of Captain George S. Nares ... and the late Captain Frank Tourle Thomson, RN Volume 1. He described Lioscorpius in the 4th Part, The Fish-Fauna of the Tropical Zone of the Indo-Pacific , Section c. The Sea between Australia and New Guinea.
