Ectreposebastes is a genus of marine bony fish inthe Setarchidae family .

features

Living ectreposebastes have a very soft body. The maximum standard length of Ectreposebastes imus is given as 18 centimeters, a specimen of Ectreposebastes niger examined by Paulin measured 14.5 centimeters. They are higher back than the other genera of the family, the height is 37% to 52% of the standard length. The swim bladder is missing or severely reduced. Usually the anal fin is supported by 3 spine rays and 6 soft rays. The pectoral fins (pectorals) have 18 to 20 fin rays.

distribution

Ectreposebastes imus is common in the temperate and tropical waters of the Atlantic Ocean , Indian Ocean, and Pacific Ocean . In the eastern Atlantic the species occurs before tropical western Africa , in the western Atlantic from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico and to Suriname . Ectreposebastes niger is common in the southwest Pacific Ocean ( New Zealand and Australia ).,

habitat

According to Eschmeyer and Collette, Ectreposebastes imus of all scorpion fish (Setarchidae was considered a subfamily) is structurally best adapted to life in the mean water. Most of the animals for their investigations were caught at depths of 500 to 800 m, the sea depth was 915 and 1800 to 2400 m. An examination of the stomach contents showed that Ectreposebastes imus does not take its food (parts of crustaceans , a flea shrimp and medium-water shrimp ) from the seabed. Tatsuta et al. indicate a general depth of 150 to 2,000 m. Of the two specimens of Ectreposebastes niger examined by Paulin , the larger animal was caught at a depth of 215 to 255 m above a depth of 1100 m and the smaller animal at a depth of 397 m, the sea depth was above the range of the echo sounder (1700 m).

Taxonomy and systematics

The genus Ectreposebastes was created in 1899 by Samuel Garman with Ectreposebastes imus as the only species and thus monotypical . The species first described by Fourmanoir as Pontinus niger was wrongly synonymous with Ectreposebastes imus by Collette and Uyeno (1972) . Eschmeyer and Randall (1975) showed that Ectrepsebastes niger is a separate species because of its large scales and because the pectoral fins do not reach the middle of the anal fin base.

The genus currently includes two species :
