history

Rapolla goes back to a foundation of the Romans, who called the place Strapellum . At the end of the 10th century, Greek monks from Sicily settled here. The founding of the monastery of Vitalis is no longer verifiable after the translation of the saint around the middle of the 11th century. Until the 11th century the town developed, it was Nicholas II. Romunmittelbarer (the Pope directly imputed) bishopric , which was in union with 1,528 Melfi.

The city was destroyed by earthquakes in 1851 and 1930. The 1980 earthquake also caused considerable damage. By the end of the 19th century, Rapolla already had a cooperative bank, water pipes and sewers were inaugurated by the fascist Podestà Pietro Dardes in 1933. The Rapolla - Gioia del Colle railway was opened in 1892 .
