Hubert Houben (born February 4, 1953 in Heinsberg ) is a German-Italian medieval historian .

life and work

After completing his studies, Hubert Houben received his doctorate in 1978 from the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg in Middle Latin under Johanne Autenrieth with a thesis on the St. Blasian manuscripts of the 11th and 12th centuries. From 1980 to 1983 he was a Feodor Lynen Research Fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation at the Institute for Middle and Modern History at the University of Lecce . During these years he devoted himself to researching the medieval memorial tradition of Italy. He taught in Lecce as a lecturer for German language and literature until 1988. After further research grants from the German Research Foundation and as a Senior Visiting Research Fellow at St. John's College in Oxford , he completed his habilitation in 1992 with a thesis on the Abbey of Santissima Trinità di Venosa at the University of Paderborn . Until 1994 he was professor associato at the University of Bologna and then until 2001 at the University of Lecce. Since 2001 he has been a full professor for Medieval History at the Faculty of Art and Human Sciences . In 2011, he refused the offer of director of the German Historical Institute in Rome . Since 2016 he has been President of the International Historical Commission for Research on the Teutonic Order (Vienna). He has been a member of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei in Rome since 2017 .

His fields of research are the history of the European Middle Ages with special consideration of southern Italian and German history, the history of the medieval church with a focus on monasticism and orders of knights , Emperor Frederick II and the castles in southern Italy, medieval urban history and intercultural relations in the Mediterranean region. In 2008 he published a description of Frederick II. Houben was able to find an early modern notarial copy of a previously unknown general privilege of Frederick II for the Teutonic Order from June 1219 in the library of the Società Napoletana di Storia Patria . Houben has published his source find in the Archives for Diplomatics .

Since 1988 Hubert Houben has had both German and Italian citizenship.
