Wolfgang Stürner (born December 25, 1940 in Stuttgart ) is a German historian .

Wolfgang Stürner studied history, German, Latin and philosophy in Tübingen and Freiburg i. Br. In Tübingen he received his doctorate in 1968 with Horst Fuhrmann 's work The Sources of Fides Konstantins in the Constitutum Constantini . In 1973 the habilitation took place with the work Nature and Society in Thinking of the High and Late Middle Ages in Stuttgart. Subsequently, from 1974 until his retirement in 2006, he was Professor of Middle and Modern History at the Historical Institute of the University of Stuttgart and, since 1988, head of the Department of Historical Auxiliary Sciences there. In February 2006, Stürner held his farewell lecture on the myth and personality of Frederick II. From 2004 to 2012, Stürner was President of the Society for Staufer History . In November 2014 he was awarded the Science Prize of the Stauferstiftung Göppingen for his life's work.

For years, Stürner has been a leading expert on the history of the Staufer Emperor Friedrich II. Since his essay on the Prooemium of the Melfi Constitutions , published in 1983 in the German Archives , Stürner has been researching Friedrich II. A large number of essays and lectures followed in the coming decades. In 1996, Stürner published Frederick II's Constitutions for the Kingdom of Sicily as an edition and wrote a two-volume biography (1992/2000) of the emperor, which replaced the standard work published by Ernst Kantorowicz in 1927 . In contrast to Kantorowicz, Stürner's comprehensive presentation is unpathetically sober. The biography meets the highest scientific requirements and at the same time reaches a wide audience. Stürner praised Friedrich in his epilogue as a highly gifted and versatile ruler. In March 2007 the sixth volume about the 13th century, written by Stürner, was published in the Neues Gebhardt . In 2013, his most important essays on Friedrich II were published in an anthology by Folker Reichert .
