Society for Staufer History
The Society for Staufer History e. V. was founded on October 29, 1968, the 700th anniversary of the death of Staufer Konradin, as a historical association under the name of the Society of Friends of Staufer History . In 1984 it was converted into a registered association with its current name. It has around 500 members, mainly in Germany, but also in Austria, Italy, France, Belgium and Switzerland. The association is based in Göppingen , where the office is located in the Alten Kasten , a former grain store , at Schlossstrasse 14.
Since March 2012 Knut Görich , who holds the chair for the history of the Early and High Middle Ages at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich , has been president . His predecessor of many years, Wolfgang Stürner , was made an honorary member. Until April 2020 the managing director was Karl-Heinz Rueß , city archivist in Göppingen. His successor has local council of the city of Göppingen chosen the historian Dominik Sieber Gerd in September of 2019.
According to its statutes, the association has its tasks in promoting research, dissemination and imparting knowledge about the rule, time and afterlife of the Hohenstaufen as well as their European significance. These goals are pursued with the following activities:
- Lecture events, guided tours and study trips
- Symposium series "StauferGestalten" and the conference series "Göppinger Staufertage"
- Publication of the book series "Writings on Staufer History and Art" and the publication of research papers in this series
- Support of the activities of the city of Göppingen to keep the legacy of the Staufer period alive, especially in the area of museum work and exhibition activities
- Support for research on the Hohenstaufen dynasty and their time
- Maintaining contacts to people, research institutions and associations at home and abroad and to the twin cities of Göppingen Foggia and Klosterneuburg who deal with the research and maintenance of Hohenstaufen history
In 1994, at the suggestion of the Staufer Society , the Deutsche Bundespost issued a special stamp for the 800th birthday of the Staufer Emperor Friedrich II .
A partnership with the Fondazione Federico II in Palermo has existed since 2000 . One element of the cooperation is the award of the Premio Federichino . This prize is awarded to personalities who have achieved remarkable things in the spirit of the Staufer Emperor Friedrich II.
