Eduard Sthamer

Eduard Sthamer (born December 26, 1883 in Hamburg , † April 28, 1938 in Berlin ) was a German historian who dedicated himself particularly to the administrative history of the Staufer and Angiovini Kingdom of Sicily .

life and career

After graduating from high school, the son of a surgeon studied at the Johanneum in Jena, Leipzig , Würzburg and Marburg . After receiving his doctorate in Jena in May 1907 he was in October of this year, a volunteer at the Prussian Historical Institute in Rome , 1909 scientific assistant and in 1911 assistant, but was after since April 1, 1908 Naples seconded to the local state archive the materials for Staufer and Understand Angiovinian history, especially the original registers. The focus was on the history of the fort buildings of Frederick II and Charles I in addition to Arthur Haseloff's art-historical studies . The First World War and the closure of the institute in 1915 interrupted this work, which could not be resumed immediately after the end of the war. In 1919 he became librarian at the Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin, and at the same time received the title of professor. Before the Second World War, Sthamer had made extensive use of the registers of Frederick II in his research on Hohenstaufen forts . Sthamer made transcripts and notes. He also commissioned photos. The register fragment burned in 1943. Its materials therefore form an important basis for a modern edition of the register Friedrich II.

He was a corresponding member of the Accademia Pontaniana in Naples.
