biography

Ruben Kogeldans was the son of Paul Kogeldans , who was one of the first dark-skinned players in the Netherlands to play for VVV Venlo since 1957 and scored three goals on his debut. The family had come to Limburg from Suriname ; of Paul's four children, only Ruben and his older brother Gerold were born in the Netherlands. In the early 1960s they were the only Surinamans living in Venlo. “We were a real sight in town at the time. Germans on a shopping tour really wanted to take photos with me. They probably thought such a little lad with a curly head was cute, ”recalls Gerold Kogeldans.

Ruben initially played for the Quick Boys , but was soon discovered by VVV scouts. Here the midfielder went through the youth teams and played in the youth team at the age of 20. After his voortgezet algemeen Hoger onderwijs had completed (comparable to a diploma ), he studied in Tilburg at the Sports Academy. Here he kept fit with Willem II, whose premises were close to the academy. At the end of the 1986/87 season, the Venloers told him that they saw no future in the club for him. He then signed a contract with Willem II for their second team. But right in the first game of the season of the Eredivisie 1987/88 he was surprisingly used as a right defender in the first team. His opponent Regi Blinker from Feyenoord was replaced in the second half. From this game on he was part of the first division squad of Tilburg and became one of the crowd's favorites. He was fast, two-footed, and had great technical ability. In an article in the soccer magazine Voetbal International he was referred to as Braziliaanse back , a "Brazilian defender" - a big compliment for the fan of the Brazilian national team who named Pelé , Falcão , Zico and Frank Rijkaard as his favorite players. In total, he made 36 games for Willem II in the Eredivisie.

During the winter break of 1988/89, Kogeldans suffered an injury to the ankle ligaments that temporarily set him back a little. Although he didn't seem quite fit in early summer either, coach Nick Stienstra and organizer Sonny Hasnoe invited him to their Kleurrijk Elftal trip to a friendship tournament in Suriname after some “first choice” players like Jos Luhukay , Roberto Straal or Henk Fräser canceled had. The Douglas DC-8 , with which the crew flew to Paramaribo , crashed on approach; Kogeldans and 14 other players were among the 176 fatalities in the aircraft accident.
